Semion Khechinashvili,  Academician

Born in the city of Kutaisi on the 26th of November 1919

He studied at Kutaisi Secondary School

In 1940 he graduated from Tbilisi Medical University.

In 1943 he started to work at the ENT Department of the Academy of Postgraduate Medical Education under the leadership of the famous otolaryngologist N.M.Aspisov. He has been Head of Department since 1953.

He wrote his doctoral thesis on audiology problems and his post-doctoral thesis on the function of the labyrinth.

The experimental work related to the doctoral thesis was carried out at the Physiology Institute of the Georgian Academy of Sciences under the supervision of the famous Physiologist and Academician I.S.Beritashvili.

He focused his clinical work on the problems of ear microsurgery.

In 1960 he started to perform surgery in cases of otitis media and otosclerosis in order to improve hearing.

Between 1960 and 1962 he spent long periods of time in the United Kingdom, Germany and the USA.

In 1964, together with N.L.Preobrazhenskiy (Moscow), V.M.Nikitina (Moscow), K.L.Jilov (Leningrad) and V.I.Kolomeichenko (Kiev), he received the Lenin Award for developing and introducing in medical practice the use of surgery to improve the hearing of patients with otosclerosis.

In 1973 he was elected corresponding member and in 1980 full member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences. In 1966 he was elected full member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences. In 1988 he received the award of Honorary Doctor from the Hummboldt University in Berlin. In 1989 he was appointed member of the German Academy of Natural Sciences (Leopoldina). He is Honorary Member of the Association of Laryngologists in five countries.

He has published 190 papers, including 4 monographs.
